Confirming Native American ancestry by autosomal DNA comparison

Autosomal DNA testing tests all of your 23 pairs of chromosomes that you inherit from both of your parents. You get half of each chromosome from each parent.
Every day people say something very similar to this:
“My family has always said that we were part Native American.”
Across the country, there is currently a lot of interest in the prospects of using genetics to determine whether somebody is really Native American or part Native American.

African Americans almost always guess that they have much higher percentages of Native American ancestry and much lower percentages of European ancestry than they actually have, which is not surprising since African Americans have long embraced the myth that their great grandmother with “high cheeks and straight black hair” looked that way because of a relationship between an ancestor who was black and another one who was Native American. But scientific results show that very few African Americans have a significant amount of Native American ancestry: In fact, according to a study just published by 23andMe researcher Katarzyna “Kasia” Bryc (also a colleague in the lab of David Reich at Harvard Medical School), only about 5 percent of African Americans have at least 2 percent of Native American ancestry, while the average African American has only 0.7 percent Native American ancestry. At the same time, Bryc’s research shows that the average African American has a whopping 24 percent of European ancestry, which explains why great-Grandma had those high cheekbones and that straight black hair.

The main element at play is that many White Americans with old colonial roots don’t really know too much about their specific ancestry. Couple this with the fact that there is now a romantic notion about having “Indian blood” and you get a lot of theorizing about ancestors. Family stories can be notoriously unreliable. They tend to get embellished and skewed with the retelling. Stories of “Indian blood” often fall into this category. Usually, they are totally bogus. Yet, people who inherit them hate to have the stories debunked by real facts.

Anzick Clovis Site (Montana, USA)

In 2014, a DNA study of the human remains from Anzick was reported in Nature (see Rasmussen et al.). Bone fragments from the Clovis period burial were subjected to DNA analysis, and the results found that the Anzick child was a boy, and he (and thus Clovis people in general) is closely related to Native American groups from Central and South America, but not to later migrations of Canadian and Arctic groups.
